3. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Composition
EDGE-PRO XL is a two component, 100% solids, gray epoxy joint
filler. When cured XL is semi-rigid (like very hard rubber) and
exhibits a hardness of Shore A80 minimum
Basic Use
XL was developed specifically for filling joints in concrete
floors defined by ACI and PCA as Class 5 or below. Class 5 is
generally described as an industrial floor subject to vehicles
with rubber-like wheels and light-to-moderate traffic frequency
and loads. XL acts as a supportive transition as traffic travels
across joints and protects the joint edges from spalling. Thus
the name Spal-Pro, for spall protection.
XL should be used in both contraction and
construction joints subject to traffic, in both new and existing
floors.
4. LIMITATIONS
XL should not be used in the following:
a. True Expansion Joints
b. Exterior Joints (paving, etc.)
c. Freezer/Cooler Floor Joints
d. Joints subject to chemical exposure
For Class 6-9 Floors, our heavy duty filler,
MM-80, is recommended.
5. CORRECT JOINT DESIGN
XL should be installed full joint depth in saw cuts and 2"
deep (min.) in thru-slab construction joints (see sheet XL-3).
Cracks and voids below may be choked off with silica sand or
SPAL-PRO ROD provided by Metzger/McGuire. Limit silica in saw
cuts to 1/4" max.
DO NOT USE COMPRESSIBLE
BACKER ROD IN SAW!

6. ADVANTAGES
EDGE-PRO XL is an excellent economical alternative to our heavy
duty MM-80 for joints subject to softer wheels and lighter loads.
EDGE-PRO XL is sufficiently rigid to carry
loads over joints and protect edges from spall damage, yet
remains slightly resilient to aid in absorbing wheel impact and
avoiding brittleness.
EDGE-PRO XL exhibits low range tensile and
adhesive strengths, characteristics necessary to allow the joints
to open as the concrete shrinkage progresses for 1-2 years.
EDGE-PRO XL is an excellent selection as a
joint filler to be used under tile and other floor coverings. It
will support the floor covering when under load and will not be
adversely affected by the covering adhesive.
EDGE-PRO XL, best of all, is formulated with
the high quality components you would expect from
Metzger/McGuire, the name known worldwide for optimum floor joint
protection.
7. PACKAGING AND
COLOR
The standard color of EDGE-PRO XL is concrete gray. Standard
packaging is a two gallon kit.
(One gal. part "A", one gal. part "B").
8. APPLICABLE
SPECIFICATION
Standardized specifications for semi-rigid industrial floor joint
fillers have not been developed. EDGE-PRO XL meets the basic
criteria set forth in the following technical publications:
"Guide for Concrete Floor and Slab
Construction,"
A.C.I. report 302.1 R-80.
"Concrete Floors on Ground,"
Ralph E. Spears, Portland Cement Assoc.(1983)
9. USDA COMPLIANCE
As of August 1995 the USDA/FSIS will no longer provide blanket
approval of the acceptability of any product. To meet the USDA's
new guidelines, we certify that EDGE-PRO XL meets the standards
for acceptability as defined by the USDA in their applicable
regulations. Letter of certification for specific projects can be
obtained from Metzger/McGuire upon request.
10. TECHNICAL
ASSISTANCE
Complete technical support and literature are available from
manufacturer or from authorized distributors.
11. AVAILABILITY
EDGE-PRO XL is immediately available from Metzger/McGuire or from
authorized construction distributors.
12. WHERE TO SPECIFY
AND FILE
EDGE-PRO XL is exclusively for use in concrete floors and
therefore should always be referenced in 03251
(expansion/contraction joints) & cast-in-place concrete,
03300. It is not a sealant and should not be specified as part of
7900, other than for cross reference.
13. INSTALLATION
The following are abbreviated. Read full installation
instructions thoroughly before use.
Storage
Keep XL in a cool, shaded area. Protect from freezing.
When To Install
XL should be installed no earlier than 30 days after concrete is
placed. A 60 to 90 day minimum cure is recommended. Our
experience has shown that the ideal installation time is when the
building or room is under permanent temperature control.
Installation Temperature
Ambient temperature should be 50°F or above. Joints should be
free of frost. If frost is suspected, wipe with solvent.
Joint Preparation
Joints should be free of saw-cut laitance, dirt, and debris. A
simple method is to use a circular saw with a masonry blade,
tilting it at a slight angle to ensure sidewall contact. Remove
all residue with vacuum or compressed air. Remove curing and
sealing compounds. Under normal circumstances, no primer is
required for XL. If unusual conditions are suspected, contact our
office.
Do not use any base rod under XL. A maximum
of 1/8" - 1/4" of silica sand may be placed in saw cuts at contractors
option.
Mixing
Use a variable speed drill at low RPM and a paint mixing paddle
(Jiffy or similar) to mix XL. Stir both components separately
before combining. Combine A and B and mix at low speed per can
instructions. Do not dilute or alter XL. Mix entire kit.
Dispensing
XL has a viscosity similar to a medium motor oil. It can be
poured from the can, but best results are obtained by using a
metal, closed-barrel caulk gun or a power, dual-feed dispensing
machine. The use of a gun or dispensing machine will ensure a
neater application and full depth penetration. Apply XL to within
approximately 1/2" of the top and allow to settle. Within 30
to 60 min. (70°F) overfill joint with a second pass. Check joint
occasionally to ensure low spots do not occur due to seepage.
Allow XL to cure, and then grind or shave flush
or leave "crowned" if acceptable to owner and
architect. Shaving is made easier by warming the cured XL with a
torch or heat gun. Do not scorch.
Clean-up
Before XL cures, clean all tools, equipment, and spillage with
solvent (Toluol, Xylol, Mek, or Acetone). For skin contact use
SBS#33 cleaner or equal.
14. MAINTENANCE
Once XL is in place and cured it is basically maintenance free.
If XL is installed in a floor that has not completed its entire
shrinkage process, or if it is installed in a joint subject to
movement, a void will likely occur. The void may occur adhesively
or cohesively. This should be construed as a normal function of
the XL and not considered a failure. See tech sheet on Separation.
To correct the condition, remove dirt and
debris, vacuum or blow clear, and refill the void with additional
XL or Spal-Pro 2000

16. SHELF LIFE
XL has a guaranteed shelf life of 180 days if the two components
remain separate and sealed. Actual shelf life is longer. Turn
cans upside down each month.
17. SAFETY/CAUTION
XL contains epoxy resins and alkali amines, both of which are
strong irritants. Keep away from children and avoid contact with
skin and eyes. Use only in ventilated areas and avoid inhaling
the fumes. Always use appropriate safety equipment including
rubber gloves, eye protection, protective skin creams (such as
Kerodex, etc.). If contact is made with skin, thoroughly rinse
with soap and water. If irritation occurs, contact a physician.
If contact with eyes occurs, rinse immediately and continuously
with clear water. Call a physician. When grinding cured material
use proper dust mask and other safety equipment.
- IMPORTANT
CAUTION-
Some people are sensitive to any contact with
epoxy. If a person shows any evidence of sensitivity (rash,
troubled breathing, etc.) he should be permanently removed from
all epoxy exposure. The effects of epoxy sensitivity do not abate
with time away from exposure but are cumulative. Refer to
Material Safety Data Sheets.
